Phoenix Labs, Psyonix LLC, Mojang Studios
Cross-platform multiplayer is more prevalent than ever, and while it may not yet be available for all major games, there is still a large selection of titles that support it. However, not all crossplay is created equal, as some games can limit what systems can play with each other. Sometimes it’s just because the game is only available on a limited number of systems, but other times the systems are specifically segregated for technical or balancing reasons.
We’re going to describe exactly which systems each game allows for cross play, so you don’t have to do this yourself. Besides that, there isn’t much to say about it, so let’s get started.
Cooperative action games
Phoenix Labs, Rare Ltd
There is nothing like it a good action gameand the ones where you can work with your friends to achieve a common goal are even better.
Intrepid (Crossplay between PS4, Xbox one, Switch, and Pc): Heavily inspired by the Monster Hunter series, Dauntless sees you teaming up with a team of friends to hunt down and defeat intimidating beasts together. And, as you defeat increasingly difficult monsters, you can craft more and more powerful gear to organically increase your avatar’s power level.
Sea of Thieves (Crossplay between Xbox one and Pc): Are you ready to be a pirate? Because in this fast-paced adventure, you and your friends can crew and sail the waves from island to island collecting treasure or, if you’re feeling aggressive, steal treasure from others. With great graphics and lots of charm, you are sure to create many memories in Sea of Thieves. (Also note, Sea of Thieves is activated Xbox Game Pass for PC and Xbox One, which is a much cheaper way to try it.)
Deep Rock Galactic (Crossplay between Xbox One and PC): You’ve probably done a lot of mining in a lot of games. Well, now you can really put those caving skills to the test as you mine valuable gems from the hearts of dangerous planets and asteroids – while taking on plenty of enemies of course. (Note: Deep Rock Galactic is available on both Steam and the Windows Store for PC. Cross-play with the Xbox One version only works with the Windows Store version.)
Liquid Bit LLC, Psyonix LLC
Healthy competition never hurts anyone. So when it comes to these games, you are going to have a lot of fun teaming up with your friends to beat other teams, or just competing with your friends for that wonderful victory screen.
Rocket league (Crossplay between PS4, Xbox one, Switch, and Pc): Do you know what would make football better? Rocket propelled cars. And, in this case, Rocket League acts as a wonderful proof of concept. Team up with your friends and compete against other players online, or compete against each other to climb the infinite skill ranks.
Fortnite (Crossplay between PS4, Xbox one, Switch, ios, Android, and Pc): You probably don’t need us to tell you about Fortnite, it’s one of the most popular games in the world today. But with the sheer number of platforms Fortnite supports, as well as being completely free to play, this makes it a crossplay game that almost anyone can participate in. It should be noted that Fortnite’s cross play is a bit more complex than other games. When it comes to joining lobbies, Fornite has a hierarchy of platforms that it will join your team with based on the platforms you all play on. PC is the highest, then Xbox One and PS4, then Mobile or Switch. So basically, even if you are playing on a phone, if one of your friends is playing on a PC, you will all join a PC lobby, and so on.
Paladins (Crossplay between PS4, Xbox one, Switch, and Pc): While Overwatch may not offer crossplay support, Paladins does a really good job of capturing that same hero-based team gameplay. Paladins is free too, so regardless of your friend’s system or budget, you can play together.
Brawlhalla (Crossplay between PS4, Xbox one, Switch, and Pc): Another free title, this time inspired by Super Smash Brothers series. Brawlhalla makes you take your opponents out of the arena to earn points. With a wide range of characters and the ability to play against your friends or team up with them in ranked mode, there are plenty of explosive brawls to be had here.
Killer Queen Black (Crossplay between Pc and Switch): Fast-paced arcade games are always a great time, and Killer Queen Black takes this action-packed gameplay and turns it into a team-based strategy brawler where you can win every match in three ways. There are several classes to master, and the basic movement mechanics can be surprisingly complex. So grab your four most strategic friends, form a team, and get ready to fight to the end in the pixelated bug-off.
Street Fighter V (Crossplay between Pc and PS4): The Street Fighter franchise does not need to be introduced; it is one of the most iconic fighting games of all time. And the latest entry, Street Fighter V, is no different with a thriving competitive scene both offline and online.
Apex Legends (Crossplay between PS4, Xbox one, Switch, and Pc): Another battle royale game, but Apex Legends is quite different from Fortnite in both gameplay and tone. Apex Legends is a first-person shooter and focuses more on movement than its cartoon competitor. And, although crossplay has yet to be implemented at the time of writing, it will be introduced later this fall. with support for all platforms, with the Switch version version.
Craft / survival games
Hello games, Mojang Studios
When well designed, a survival game (or focused on crafting) can provide players with hundreds of hours of content. And since these games are usually about spending those many hours working on long-term projects, adding a few friends to the equation can speed up this process considerably.
Minecraft (Crossplay between PS4, Xbox one, Switch, ios, Android, and Pc): Minecraft was actually a leader in cross-play support, with cross-play between all major platforms without complications before many other games. Of course, Minecraft itself is ridiculously well known, but now you can rest assured that regardless of the platform, you and your friends can build your own blocky world together. (Note: There are two versions of Minecraft on PC: Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on the Windows Store. Only the Windows Store version works for cross play.)
No Man’s Sky (Crossplay between PS4, Xbox one, and Pc): Explore a seemingly endless universe in No Man’s Sky, all with a few friends by your side. Pilot your ships, explore procedurally generated planets, and complete quests together, all while giving each other a name in this oversized sandbox.
Ark Survival Evolved (Crossplay between Xbox One and PC): Ark Survival Evolved belongs to the most challenging class of survival games as it sees you and your friends surviving in a dangerous world full of dinosaurs. But as you progress through the game and start to take over part of the island, you can actually tame these same dinosaurs and order them to do some of the work for you. It’s a game that takes time, but if you’re willing to put in the hours, you can have a great time here. (Note: Ark Survival Evolved is available on both Steam and the Windows Store for PC. Crossplay with Xbox One will not work if you are playing on the Steam version. Ark is also available on PS4, but crossplay is not supported at all.)
Astroneer (Crossplay between Xbox One and PC): Astroneer focuses on casual survival and crafting. There aren’t a lot of immediate threats or pressing issues, but you just build your base at your own pace, while also experimenting with the different gadgets you can create. This makes it the perfect game to play if you or your friends are new to the genre. But even for those who are veterans of the genre, Astroneer can offer a nice change of pace. (Note: Astroneer is available on both Steam and the Windows Store for PC. Crossplay with Xbox One will not work if you are playing on the Steam version. Astroneer is also available on the PS4, but crossplay is not supported at all.)
Chucklefish, Clever Endeavor Games
These games might not fit into a particular category, but they’re still worth a look at when it comes to crossover multiplayer.
Wargroove (Crossplay between Xbox one, Switch, and Pc): Back to the niche Nintendo series Advance Wars, Wargroove is a turn-based strategy game about managing different units to win the day. In multiplayer, you and your friends can play as a team or play against each other. Either way, you’re sure to have a great time micromanaging these pixelated soldiers. (Note: Wargroove is also available on PS4, but crossplay is not compatible with this version.)
Ultimate Chicken Horse (Crossplay between PS4, Switch, and Pc): Ultimate Chicken Horse is all about balance. The balance between your desire to win and your desire to make your friends fail. At the start of each round, each player has the option of placing a scene element or obstacle. As the scene progresses, you need to make sure that you are still able to beat while being too difficult for your opponents. You can probably already see where the strategy comes in. (Note: Ultimate Chicken Horse is also available at Xbox one, but crossplay is not compatible with this version.)
Forza Horizon 4 (Crossplay between Xbox One and PC): Open world racers are a good time, and Forza Horizon 4 offers one of the nicest maps of its kind, as well as some of the car’s most in-depth customizations (to optimize your car’s performance and appearance). So start your engines and get ready to cross the UK with reckless abandonment. (Also note, Forza Horizon 4 is available on the Xbox Game Pass for the Xbox One and PC, which is a much cheaper way to try it out.)
It’s great to see crossplay in any game, and the fact that we now have such a diverse and quality selection of titles is even better. And, of course, that selection will only grow as cross-play becomes a more standardized aspect of multiplayer play.
