When is the fast internet fast enough? Never, realistically and Google Fiber knows it. This is why the company is is preparing to unveil speeds of 2 Gbps for $ 100 per month. Only $ 30 more than the current 1 Gbps offer. The internet is fast enough to download a 15GB Blu-ray quality movie in about a minute.
Of course, with all new internet speeds, the devil is in the details. First, Google Fiber only exists in 15 cities at the moment; not everyone is lucky. And unlike most fiber optic offerings, your download speeds don’t match your download speeds. You will be limited to a “single” 1 Gbps download (the horror).
For now, Google is testing the service in just two cities, Nashville, Tennessee and Huntsville, Alabama. But if that’s you, and you don’t mind spending $ 100 a month on the fastest internet, you are getting a lot for your money.
The service will include 6 new Wi-Fi routers, for example, to make sure you can enjoy the maximum speed of 2 Gbps (or as close as Wi-Fi can get you). You will also get a mesh extender to ensure good solid coverage throughout your home.
But, you’ll also need devices that support 2 Gbps speeds, and whether you’re talking Wi-Fi or connected Ethernet, that’s a small list right now. Yet even if you may not be able to achieve the full splendor of 2 Gbps, you will likely benefit from higher overhead that will work for you.
You will need to be in Nashville or Huntsville and join Google Trusted Tester Program to begin. If you are in another Google Fiber city, you can register to join as soon as 2 Gbps speeds arrive in your area.
