After a saga of contradictory announcements, WarnerMedia has finally removed its HBO Now app from 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs. The company originally planned to remove HBO Now and HBO GO from the old Apple TV on April 30, but changed its decision after a few setbacks. HBO GO is still available on older Apple TVs.
On paper, it seems that WarnerMedia is completely snubbing its subscribers. But the company is simply removing its app from the old Apple TVs. It’s a little annoying, but you can still cast HBO Now on your old Apple TV using AirPlay.
WarnerMedia will continue to support the HBO Now app on the Apple TV 4K and the Apple TV HD. If you are not sure which Apple TV you have, then you should take a second to watch Apple’s identification tool. Or just look at your Apple TV remote control: 2nd and 3rd generation models come with an aluminum remote control, while new Apple TVs come with a black remote control Siri Remote.
