How (and Why) to Stick to Your Routines While Traveling

When you are on vacation, you can stick to your daily routine. The holidays are, indeed, the time to try new things. However, it can be helpful to stay as faithful as possible to your usual routine.

The benefits of sticking to your routine

Travel is advantageous in many ways, especially when you go with an open mind and a good level of adaptability. However, it requires a lot of change, which makes it difficult to maintain your habits. As soon as you leave the comfort of your home, you end up with the excitement of being in a new place. Most often, it contributes to poor decision-making. How many times have you spent half of your holiday eating junk food? Do you usually complete your list of things to do every day when you live on a tropical island or in a ski resort?

It happens to the best of us. After all, the holidays should be nice. It's an opportunity to relax and forget about the stress we often face at work or in our daily lives. But that does not mean we have to throw our daily routine out the window right off the bat.

Routines keep us informed and help us manage our time. They can also improve our health by helping us manage stress and achieve our goals.

However, when you find yourself in a new exciting environment, your vision of your habits may change. Things like exercising, eating healthy meals, meditating, updating your newspaper or reading, suddenly become chores.

The good news is that this is not necessarily the case. All you need to maintain your healthy habits during your trip is a spoonful of organization and a drop in commitment.

How to maintain habits while traveling

Minimizing the differences between your daily life and your travel schedule is essential to staying healthy, productive and motivated to maintain your habits. The more organized you are, the easier it will be.

Each successful trip starts with a good plan. When planning the activities you want to do during your trip, try to save yourself some time to engage in one of your daily rituals. For example, if you know that you will probably be out every day after 10 am, try getting up a few hours early to meditate, exercise or write before breakfast. If you already do it at home, it will not be difficult to stick to this habit.

To make things easier, try staying in hotels with gyms and close to health food stores, juice bars, or common workspaces. This will save you time finding ways to maintain your routine once you have arrived.

Once you plan your travel schedule, you'll be more aware of what's ahead and better prepared. Be sure to pack the items you use daily, such as a meditation bowl, your diary, or your favorite protein powder. When you have these items with you traveling, you feel more comfortable and more inclined to stay true to your habits.

Finally, focus on your well-being. Give priority to things that make you feel good and that are important to you. Staying engaged in your routine can give you a sense of accomplishment, but it can also give you a sense of frustration or disappointment if you do not do it.

Traveling can keep you busy and that's good. Concentrate on a few daily habits that you would like to keep and incorporate them into your travel schedule as mini-goals. It's a more realistic approach to staying healthy while enjoying life.

The best routines to maintain

It is good to prioritize healthy habits, even on the other side of the world. We chose the three that we think are the most beneficial, but do not hesitate to replace them with yours.


PlanAgain, choose a hotel that has a gym either on site or within walking distance. If you prefer privacy when you train, make sure to choose spacious accommodations.
To prepare: Be sure to pack your training equipment and accessories. If you do not have access to a gym, get a jump rope or resistance bands, or save YouTube training videos.
prioritize: Decide how many times you want to work during your absence, how many videos you want to make per session or how many specific exercises you want to do per day.

Night and morning

PlanIf you are a light sleeper, make sure your home is not near a high traffic area. Check out comments online for any mention of thin walls or loud noises. If you like to do yoga at sunrise, opt for a hotel located near the beach or accessible from the rooftop terrace, so that you can make all your sun salutations in peace.
To prepare: Take ear plugs and a sleep mask to sleep more easily. Bring comfort items, such as your pajamas, pillowcases or favorite oils.
prioritizeIt's easy to get carried away with drinks and conversations when you're in a new place, but sleep deprivation has no benefit. Try to stick to your bedtime routine as much as possible. While eating

PlanIf you like to cook, choose a hotel near a supermarket. If you have dietary restrictions or preferences, do your research and choose to stay somewhere near restaurants that offer you options.
To prepare: Pack some of your favorite things, such as protein bars, nut mixes or tea, in case you do not find them at your destination.
prioritizeTry to have a healthy breakfast and avoid overeating at dinner. But remember that a little fun, especially on vacation, does not hurt anyone.

Keeping up with your routines during your absence does not have to be arduous. If you are realistic and you plan, prepare and prioritize well, you can switch to a holiday mode smoothly, while maintaining your healthy habits.
