Alexa is great to control your smarthome and ask various questions, but she can also call and send messages to your friends and family. Here's how it works and how to configure it.
You must first upgrade the Alexa application to the latest version. If you have not yet done so, go to the App Store on your phone and receive the update if you have not updated the application during the last few weeks.
Next, open the Alexa app, and you will be greeted with an introduction to the new call feature and messaging. Press "Start" at the bottom to continue. If you have already reviewed the installation process, go to the next section.
On the next screen, select your name.
Confirm your name and click "Continue" at the bottom of the page.
You should now allow the Alexa application to access contacts on your phone. Here is how you will call and send messages to other people using your echo. Press "Allow" to continue.
Then enter your phone number to associate with your Echo, then press "Continue". Whenever someone of your phone contacts also sets up this feature on their Echo, they will automatically appear in the contacts list of the Alexa application. This is also how your phone number appears on the caller ID of a friend when you call his phone from your echo.
After entering your phone number, you will receive a verification code. Enter this code on the next screen and click "Continue."
Once this is done, you will be redirected to the Conversations screen in the Alexa application. This is where all your messages will appear, similar to the conversations screen of the default text messaging application on your phone.
To access the list of contacts that you can send using the Alexa application or your Echo, tap the outline of the person in the upper right corner
On this screen you will see all your contacts that have configured the call and Echo messaging.
How to call someone
You can call some one of two ways: using your Echo or Alexa app to call Echo from someone else or using your Echo to call the phone from somebody else
To call someone using the Alexa application, go to the contacts screen, select a contact, and press the phone button. Recipient's echo lights up and makes a chime sound, as well as announcing who is calling. Their phone will also ring through the Alexa app, but they can answer your call on either device, either by saying "Alexa, answer the call" or simply accepting the call on their phone using the Alexa application
To call handsfree using your Echo, simply say "Alexa, call Dave" (or whatever you want to call). However, this is where things can become a bit complicated.
If the person you are calling is listed in your contacts in the Alexa application as well as in your phone contacts, it will default to calling its Echo and Alexa application. If this person does not appear in your Alexa contacts, but it is in your phone's contacts, it will call your phone and look like an ordinary phone call, with your name and phone number appearing on its display. I'll talk to them on your Echo rather than on your phone.
If you do not want Alexa not to call Echo and prefer to call her phone, you can say something like "Alexa, call Dave mobile" instead of just calling Dave.
If you want to make a call via your Echo but the person or company you are calling is not in your phone contacts, you can simply call "Alexa , call 555-555-5555 "and dial this number.
In any case, to end a call, you can either wait for the other party to hang up, or you can just say "Alexa, hang up."
Also keep in mind that you can not receive regular phone calls via your Echo – you can only phone for the moment. Hopefully this will change in the near future.
How to Message Someone
Messaging is a bit different from the call in that you can not send text messages to a phone number via the Alexa application or your Echo. You can only send messages to other Alexa users. However, there are two ways to do this: use the Alexa application or use your Echo device.
To send a message to someone using the Alexa application, go to the Contacts screen, select a contact, and press the
This will start a new conversation page with this contact if there is not already one. From there, you can press the microphone button to record a voice message or press the keyboard button to type a message.
To send a voicemail message to someone who uses your echo, say "Alexa, Dave message" (or, again, whomever, you want to send a message)
Once received, Echo of the receiver lights up and makes a chime sound, but Alexa does not announce that there is a message (contrary to what she does when there is a call). However, they also receive a notification on their phone and can view or listen to the message in the Alexa application. They can also meet in the application too.
From there, the recipient simply has to say "Alexa, message game" and he will play your voice message. If you typed your message instead, Alexa herself will transcribe it and say your message out loud using her own voice.
