As of iOS 11, the iPhone and iPad have moved to the new high efficiency HEIC / HEIF format for the pictures. You may have realized this when you tried to export photos. Here are two easy ways to convert HEIC photos to JPG.
Do you need to convert?
iOS and iPadOS are smart enough to handle HEIC / HEIF and JPG / JPEG conversion on the fly. For example, when you attach an image to the Mail application or send it via an application, it goes through a JPG file. But there are times when it doesn’t work, like when you transfer AirDrop photos from your iPhone to your Mac.
Overall, the HEIC format is superior to the JPEG format. It takes up less space and supports 16-bit color capture instead of 8-bit. But it only works as long as you stay in the Apple ecosystem.
If you also use the Windows or Android devices, or if you need to make sure your photos are in JPG format, you can use the following methods. If you want to revert to the default JPEG format for new photos, you can change the capture format of your camera from the Setting application.
How to convert HEIC photos to JPG using the Files app
You can do this directly from the Files app – no third-party app is required.
Simply copying photos from the Photos application and pasting them into a folder in the Files application converts photos from HEIC to JPG.
First, open the Application Files on your iPhone or iPad. Here, choose either the location “On my iPhone / iPad” or a cloud storage option. (If you choose the cloud storage location, the data will be taken into account in your online storage plan and the photos will not always be available offline.)
Here, press and hold in the blank area, then choose the “New Folder” option from the pop-up window.
Give a name to the folder and press the “Done” button.
Now open the Photos app and navigate to the album containing the HEIC photos. Here, press the “Select” button in the upper toolbar.
Now select all the photos you want to convert.
Tap the “Share” button in the lower left corner.
Of Share the sheet, choose the option “Copy photos”.
The photos are now on your clipboard. Open the Files app and navigate to the folder we created in the above steps.
Here, simply press and hold in the blank area and choose the “Paste” option from the context menu.
Instantly, you will see your HEIC photos appear here, in JPG format.
Many other applications can quickly convert HEIC images to JPEG files on the App Store. Some may contain advertisements or require payment. Search the App Store and you will find them.
If you have a lot of HEIC photos stored on your Mac, you can use an Automator script to quickly convert them to JPG format.
