You might think QR codes are in 2006, but they're coming back. Here's how to create yours.
You may be wondering, "Why would I want to or should I create my own QR code?", And that's a valid question. QR codes are a kind of hidden gem that many people underestimate, and they can be used in all kinds of different ways. Once scanned, they can take you to a specific website, point you to a file to download, or even just display a bunch of text on something.
For example, I often use a QR code of my phone number. If I want to give my number to someone, they can simply open the camera on their phone and scan the QR code image that I have stored on my own phone.
If that's something you're interested in, here's how you can create your own QR codes for any situation.
On the iPhone
There are quite a few apps that can scan QR codes, as well as create them, but my favorite is QR Reader which is free to download. We will not need the scanning capabilities of the application (especially since iOS can do it natively now ), but we will use the authoring capabilities.
Once the application is open, press the down arrow located in the upper right corner of the screen.
Then tap the QR code icon at the bottom.
Press the "+" button in the upper left corner to start the process of creating a QR code.
Next, select the type of QR code you want to do in the list provided. So, if you want your QR code to lead to a web page, you select "Website". Scroll down for even more options.
In this case, I will make a QR code that will take you to my Twitter profile, so I will select "Twitter Profile" from the list.
Enter the details you want, which will depend on the type of QR code you create. In this case, I will type in my Twitter handle and click "Create" in the top right corner.
Your QR code will be created and will appear in the list of custom QR codes that you have created.
Now you can stop here and use the app to store your QR codes (and display them by tapping the QR code image to the left to enlarge), or you can export them to another application or service. To do this, tap the QR code text and select "Share".
From here you can send the QR code to an unlimited number of applications or services that you have connected to your iPhone, such as Dropbox, Google Drive, iMessage, and more. You can also save the QR code image on your filmstrip by pressing "Save Image".
If you have an Android device, you can create your own QR codes with an application called QR Code Generator and it is free to download. To begin, open the application and press "Text" at the top to select the type of QR code to create.
You do not get as many options as the iPhone application that we used above, but it gives you the basics. Select the one you want to use to continue. In this case, we will choose "Email".
Enter an email address (or any other information you need to type based on the QR code you create), then tap "Generate" in the upper right corner.
Your QR code will be created, and from there you have several options. The first option is to save the QR code image locally in your phone's gallery by pressing the floppy disk button at the top.
You can also press the Share button to send the QR code to an unlimited number of apps and services, such as Dropbox and Google Drive, or to send it via Hangouts or SMS.
On your computer
If you prefer not to download another application to your phone to create QR codes, you can do this on your computer using a website. There is a ton to choose from, and most of them are completely free to use. Our favorite, however, is QRCode Monkey .
You first choose the type of QR code to do at the top.
After that, enter the relevant information you want to include in the QR code.
Then you can click on "Set Colors" to change the color of the QR code if you wish, but this is completely optional.
Similarly, you can click on "Add a logo image" to add a logo to the center of the QR code if you wish.
Finally, you can click "Customize Design" to change the way the QR code appears in general, like changing square shapes and more.
Once you're done, use the slider to change the QR code resolution, which makes it as low or high quality as you like.
Then click on "Create QR Code" on the right to see a preview of what your QR code will look like.
Then click on "Download PNG" to save the QR code as an image. You can also choose other formats below if you wish.
Once the image is downloaded, you can do whatever you want: print it, save it to your phone or send it to a friend.
