If you want to capture thoughts on the go, the Apple Voice Memos app on an iPhone or iPad is a wonderful way to do it with your voice. But sometimes it can be difficult to quickly find the app on your device. Fortunately, there is a simple way to start voice memos using a shortcut in Control Center.
A word about the control center and how to launch it
Control Center is a collection of shortcuts to commonly used tasks, such as adjusting screen brightness, volume, playing songs, etc. It also allows you to quickly launch features such as turning on the flashlight or taking a photo.
In the next step, we will add a shortcut to launch the voice memos. But first, here’s how to launch Control Center itself.
iPhone X or later / iPad running iOS 12 or later: Swipe down from the top right corner of the screen.
iPhone 8 or earlier / iPad running iOS 11 or earlier: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen. (Control Center first appeared on iOS 7).
Add a voice memo shortcut to the control center
If you want to add a small icon to the Control Center which will quickly launch the voice memos, proceed as follows.
Open Settings, then drag the list down until you find Control Center. Tap it.
In the Control Center, press “Customize controls”.
You will be presented with a list of functions that you can choose to add to the Control Center.
Swipe down and find the “Voice Memos” option and tap it.
The voice memos icon will be added to the list of shortcuts at the top of the screen. If desired, you can rearrange the shortcuts in the Control Center by dragging and dropping them in this list.
Now exit the settings by returning to your home screen or another application.
Swipe the edge of the screen to launch Control Center. You should see the voice memos icon (which looks like a wave made up of vertical lines) on the screen.
Tap the Voice Memos icon to launch it.
The Voice Memos application will appear on the screen.
To save a memo, press the big red “Save” button at the bottom of the screen. Then speak with your mouth facing your iPhone, at least 6 to 10 inches apart for best results.
To stop recording on an iPhone, press the red button with a white circle around it. On an iPad, stop recording by pressing the “Done” button on the right side of the screen.
The voice memos will then prompt you to give the voice memo you just recorded a label. Type the label you want using the on-screen keyboard and press Return.
In the Voice Memos app, you see a list of recorded voice memos, including when they were recorded and their duration.
To read them at any time, press the play button, which is a large black triangle pointing to the right. The circles with “15” inside will go forward or backward in the audio 15 seconds at a time.
Whenever you want to quickly record a voice memo, simply launch Control Center by swiping your finger across the screen, tapping the Voice Memos icon, and you will be immediately redirected to the app.
How to Delete Voice Memos from the Control Center
If you want to delete the voice memos from your Control Center, proceed as follows.
Go to Settings> Control Center.
Tap “Customize controls”.
Find the Voice Memos entry in the list (with a red minus sign in a circle next to it) and tap it. It will be removed from the Control Center.
