WhatsApp groups can work with memes and videos. All of these media take up valuable storage space on your iPhone or Android phone. Here’s how to reduce WhatsApp storage without removing the app.
WhatsApp has an integrated storage management tool for Android and iPhone. Using the tool, you can quickly see which conversation takes up the most storage space, then enter and erase different types of media individually. For example, you can only delete videos from a group chat.
Reduce WhatsApp storage space on Android
You will find the storage management tool in the settings section. Open the WhatsApp app on your Android smartphone and tap the three-dot menu button.
Here, tap on the “Settings” option.
Now choose the “Data and storage usage” list.
Here you will see a section “Storage usage”. It will tell you how much WhatsApp storage space is using on your Android smartphone.
Once you hit the “Storage Usage” section, you’ll see a list of all the conversations in WhatsApp, sorted by the storage space they occupy. Tap a conversation at the top of the list.
You will now see how many text messages, images, videos and GIFs are associated with the conversation. Press the “Free up space” button in the lower right corner of the screen.
Now tap the check mark next to the type of media you want to delete. Then press the “Delete items” button.
In the pop-up window, tap the “Delete messages” option.
Messages and media will be deleted from WhatsApp storage, and you will recover the storage space.
Reduce WhatsApp storage space on iPhone
The process of reducing WhatsApp storage space on the iPhone is slightly different.
On your iPhone, open the WhatsApp application and go to the “Settings” tab. Here, tap on the “Data and Storage Usage” option.
Now swipe down and tap on the “Storage Usage” option.
You will now see a list of all WhatsApp conversations, sorted by size. Tap a conversation to see the details of its storage usage. At the bottom of the screen, press the “Manage” button.
Now select the types of media you want to delete.
From there, press the “Clear” button.
Press the “Delete” button again in the popup message to confirm.
From now on, the relevant data will be deleted from WhatsApp storage and you will recover the storage space. You can go to Settings> General> iPhone Storage to check available storage on your iPhone.
If you are using WhatsApp as your primary messaging service, you should know that you can turn off automatic recording function for incoming media. Once you have deleted unnecessary conversations, we recommend that you deactivate the automatic recording and automatic downloading functions in the settings. In this way, you will avoid repeatedly erasing WhatsApp conversations.
