You may spend most of your time in your bedroom, but you can still benefit from smarthome technology. A smarter room can help you fall asleep and wake up in the morning.

Why a smart room?

Bedrooms are a unique piece in your living space. You spend a lot of time there, but most of it is usually dormant. The addition of smarthome technology can enhance a bedroom as you ponder your choices. With a few devices, you can make your room more comfortable for sleeping and relaxing. A smart screen, lights, smart blinds and smart plugs can help you sleep and wake up feeling refreshed.

Add smart lights to start and end the day

Sometimes you want to relax in the room before sleeping. So you can read or watch TV in bed. The problem is that when you are ready to fall asleep, the light switches may be out of reach. Or the lights may be too bright for your spouse or partner.

Smart lights are ideal for controlling from the comfort of your bed. You can create timers, turn them on and off with your voice or phone, and if you use smart light bulbs, you can dim or change the colors to get something less hard for the evening. And with some routines, you can create a sunrise effect without having to buy an expensive clock.

And if you have a large headboard, you can add ambient light by placing LED strips on the back of the headboard. You can do the same thing with a TV in your room.

For smart bulbs and LED strips, we recommend Philips Hue for a few reasons. They work under Zigbee, so they are less likely to interfere with your Wi-Fi devices. Philips Hue is compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant. The Hue app has an integrated wake-up routine that supports the sunrise function without having to configure multiple routines. And you can associate your Hue lights with a Lutron Aurora lighting switch, which slides on your standard light switches.

The main problem of Philips Hue is its cost. A starter kit with two white bulbs and a hub will cost you $ 70. For the price, you get a better bulb class, usually brighter and brighter if you buy color bulbs. Hue bulbs also use Zigbee, which means that they work even when the Internet is down. Other smart light bulbs can appeal to Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, which can lead to range issues or lose their intelligence in the event of a blackout. But if you want to save money, we have also gathered cheaper alternatives you may want to consider.

Once you have taken care of your lights, you may want to consider taking the other light source in your room: your windows. Smart shades resemble intelligent lighting: you can live without them and they do not provide a crucial function. But once you have them, you may not want to live without them.

You can not only raise and lower the blinds with your voice or phone, but you can also create timers and routines that take care of them for you. Your routine might lift hues when it's time to get up or down as part of a "good night's" protocol. This is the power of smarthomes; an order can take care of a lot of things.

Lutron Serena Shades work well and are compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant and even Apple Watches. But they are expensive, often for hundreds of dollars.

If you want to spend less, keep an eye on IThe shades Fyrtur de kea . Although the company does not release them until October, the price will be between $ 129 and $ 179 depending on the size, much cheaper than most competing products. And they will be compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant.

Consider a voice assistant with a screen

The rooms usually have an alarm clock, but you can move on to something better. A smart screen can control your other smart products throughout the home and provide information such as weather and appointments.

You can use a voice assistant without a screen, but you will not have a readable clock and other visual information. Sometimes it's just quicker to read your calendar appointments than to listen to them one by one, for example.

Amazon offers both the Echo show and Square, and both, the spot is better suited to bedrooms. It is smaller and designed to emulate an alarm clock, which helps it to fit perfectly into your bedroom.

But we prefer Google's Nest Hub. Unlike Echo devices, the Nest Hub missing a camera, which adds a feeling of intimacy in your bedroom. And it doubles as a digital photo frame, a feature we like. The Home Hub also has better screen attenuation than the Spot, a feature you'll appreciate if you prefer a dark room when you sleep.

If you prefer to use Google Assistant, but in a format similar to a clock, like Amazon, Spot, our partner site, Review Geek, calls Lenovo Clock. almost perfect. At $ 80, that's almost half the price of the Nest Hub, but it's even smaller and leaves the camera alone for more privacy in the bedroom.

If you are in one or the other of the ecosystems, this should ultimately help you choose the device to buy.

Use smart plugs for all your stupid things

Your bedroom probably has a myriad of electronics, whether chargers, fans, heaters, humidifiers or TVs. Smart plugs are a great way to add intelligence to these devices without having to buy a new TV or plug a socket.

Smart plugs are also easy to configure. simply plug one into an electrical outlet, then plug in an object. You'll need to set it up with an app, then connect it to Google Assistant or Alexa, but once you do, you'll have control over the phone and voice.

It's also a great option if you like to sleep with a fan or heater on, but do not want it to work all night long. And used correctly, smart plugs can potentially save you money. If you usually leave a humidifier running all day, a simple timer can solve this problem.

With smart plugs, you do not always need to buy a brand new device to give you the intelligence and control of the voice. We covered several inexpensive options in the past, this may cost less than buying a new heater, for example. Before you buy a smart plug, you need to turn on your devices, unplug them, and then reconnect them. If they do not light up and do not work automatically, they are not suitable for a smart plug.

Complete the room

Some advanced technologies may not be physically present in the bedroom. While one smart thermostat may not save you moneyThe convenience of changing the set temperature in the comfort of your bed is something you will enjoy at three in the morning. Both Nest and ecobee offer temperature sensors, and it can be helpful to place one in the bedroom. Depending on the thermostat model you choose and the number of sensors you want, you will spend between $ 180 and $ 350 to equip your home.

And you may want to consider adding to your room amenities that are not specifically in the category of the most sophisticated. Wireless Chargers are excellent when the lights are dim and it is difficult to find the charging port of your phone. We like shippers who sink into a night standwhich reduces both the clutter of wires and surfaces. All you need is a hole saw, drill and nightstand that will allow you to put the cord in a socket located under the top surface. Wireless chargers are also relatively inexpensive, usually around $ 20. However, you may need to provide your own wall adapter.

The intelligent one-room camera we do not suggest is Fans of Zigbee. Currently, the most famous fans are designed to work with Wink, a smart hub we do not recommend anymore. Even if you are willing to take this risk, the Alexa integration gives you only the voice control of the built-in light. You must control all fan operations from the included remote control or Wink application. You can also save money and buy a fan with a remote control.

Not all suggestions are perfect for every room. Take stock of your situation and trust only the smart technology that suits your bedroom. Do not forget that the goal is to add convenience, not problems and frustration.
