Apple has announced Face ID next to the iPhone X and touted its strong security improvements over Touch ID. But with the security dialed up, the face ID can be slow. Here's how to make it work a little faster.
Security and convenience tend to be in contradiction. That's why people use weak passwords and that's why they do not use password codes on their phones either. The facial identity is however an exception, because it improves the security without disturbing.
How secure is Face ID?
Apple says that there is 1 chance out of 1,000 that another person may unlock your iPhone or iPad using a face not registered with Face ID. This rate may change if you have an identical twin, but for most people, this is not a problem definitely a better option than Touch ID for these people. Both are more convenient than using a standard four or six digit code, but if they are safer is not always clear because of the legalities related to biometric authentication and law enforcement.
Apple also offers the option of unlocking your device when it detects your attention, which makes things even safer. If you need attention, your device will not be unlocked if it can not see your eyes. This means, for example, that no one can hold the phone in front of you while you sleep.
But this peculiarity also has its problems. Some types of glasses prevent Face ID from seeing your eyes and their detection takes time. It is not very long, but it is often a remarkable phenomenon.
Turning off Attention Detection will reduce the time needed for facial identity to confirm your identity before unlocking your device. Do not forget that your iPhone could potentially be unlocked without your knowledge if you disable this feature. But, if the speed benefits are sufficient, turning it off is easy.
Disable attention detection
Open the settings, then press the "Face ID and Code" button. You will need to enter your code to continue.
Scroll down to the section labeled CAUTION and switch the Require Attention for Face ID switch to the "Off" position.
Press "OK" on the confirmation screen.
Attention detection is now disabled. Lock your device and reactivate its screen to use the new faster, faster Face ID.
Other goodies related to attention
Your iPhone and iPad may detect your attention for purposes other than facial identity. They can prevent the lighting of your screen and attenuate the notifications if they also detect your attention.
In the CAUTION section of the Face Identity area and the parameter secret code, set the Sensitive Features switch to the "ON" position.
Face ID is a great addition to the iPhone and the iPad and continues to improve. He also stays much more secure than Similar features on Android even if you choose to disable attention detection.
