How to Speed Up YouTube’s Playback Speed (or Slow It Down)

Are you watching a YouTube video that is advancing too slowly or too fast? It’s easy to speed up (or slow down) any video playing on the YouTube website or in the YouTube mobile app. Here’s how.

How YouTube’s Playback Speed Controls Work

YouTube includes a feature called “Playback Speed” which allows you to select a speed between 0.25 times and 2 times normal speed. “1” being the normal speed, “0.25” is equal to one quarter of the original speed (slow playback) and “2” is twice as fast as normal.

If something seems to take forever – maybe a long presentation, an interview, or a podcast where everyone is speaking slowly – you can actually speed up the process. Likewise, if you are watching a tutorial and things are moving too fast, you can slow down the video so you can follow along.

YouTube’s playback speed feature does not change the pitch of the video when you speed it up or slow it down. If so, a person’s voice might sound like a squeaky mouse when fast, or a heavy giant when slow. Instead, it compresses or stretches the audio and video samples to maintain the same audio tone during playback – so it looks like the same person is speaking faster or slower. The music will also play faster or slower without altering the musical touch.

How To Change YouTube Reading Speed On The Web

You can change the playback speed both in a web browser and in the YouTube mobile app for iPhone, Android, and iPad. First, we’ll show you how it works on the web.

To slow down or speed up a YouTube video in a browser, visit YouTube.com and go to a YouTube video. Display the playback toolbar and click on the “gear” icon located in the lower right corner of the video area.

To change the playback speed of YouTube on the desktop, click the gear icon.

In the menu that appears, click on “Read Speed”.

In the “Playback speed” menu, you can select a speed between 0.25 times and 2 times the speed, including a custom value within this range. “1” being the normal speed, any value less than 1 will slow down the video, while any value greater than 1 will speed up the video.

Choose a YouTube playback speed from the list.

After that, click outside the menu to close it, and the next time you press the play button, the video will play at the speed you selected. If you need to go back to normal, click the gear icon again, select “Playback Speed” and then choose “1” from the list.

How to change YouTube playback speed on YouTube mobile app

If you want to slow down or speed up a YouTube video on your iPhone, iPad or Android device, first open the YouTube app. While playing a video, tap the screen once to display the toolbar, then tap the vertical ellipses (three vertically aligned dots) button in the upper right corner of the video image.

In the YouTube app, tap the three-dot button.

In the menu that appears, select “Playback speed”.

In the “Playback speed” list that appears, select the desired speed. Remember that any value less than 1 slows down the video, while any number greater than 1 speeds up the video.

Select the YouTube playback speed you want from the list.

After that, close the menu and the video will resume at the selected speed. If you need to return to normal speed, press the ellipsis button again and change the speed to “1”.
