Your Philips Hue bulbs, bridges and switches all work firmware you can update. It’s particularly critical now, a vulnerability could allow the installation of malware on a Philips Hue bridge. Here’s how to check for and install Hue updates.
Updates are installed via the Hue app for iPhone, iPad or Android. They can be installed automatically so you never have to think about it, and we recommend that you turn on automatic updates if you haven’t already. The update that fixes the security hole was released in mid-January 2020, so chances are it is already installed on your hardware.
How to check and install Hue updates
To check for updates, open the Hue app on Android, iPhone, or iPad.
Tap the “Settings” icon at the bottom of the screen. Scroll down and tap “Software Update” at the bottom of the list.
You will see a “Check for update” message while the app checks for updates for your devices. This may take some time.
Once complete, you will see a list of connected devices, including bridges, bulbs, and switches. If the app says “No updates available,” you already have all the latest updates.
If the app indicates that updates are available, find the device that needs an update from the list. There will be no green check mark next to it. Tap the device name, and then tap the “Update” button. The Hue app will download the update and install it on your device. Your light may flash during the process.
How to activate automatic shade updates
We recommend that you make sure that automatic updates are turned on so you never have to worry about them again. This is especially true now that we are seeing security updates for Hue software, not just bug fixes and feature updates.
Tap the “Auto Update” option on the software update screen to find these options.,
Make sure the automatic update option is enabled here.
You can also select the time you want Hue to install updates. Your lights may flash during this process, so choose a time when it won’t bother you. You probably don’t want your bedroom lights to update (and blink) while you sleep.
