How to Use Your Android Smartphone as a Webcam on Windows 10

Webcams are hard to find and expensive at the moment. If you’ve already had enough of the puny and integrated webcam on your Windows 10 computer, try using the camera on your Android phone instead. Here’s how it works.

If you have a newer Android smartphone, the rear camera has a much better sensor than most Windows laptops and some of the cheapest webcams on the market. Trust us – it’s one of the fastest ways to improve your videoconference game.

You can try to use your Video conferencing platform Android app, but if you join a work call, you may want to use your Windows computer instead. This way you can access all the programs you need to work from home.

You can use your Android smartphone (front and rear cameras) as a wireless webcam with the DroidCam application on your phone and DroidCam Client for Windows 10. It works with the most popular video calling applications on Windows (except the Windows Store version of Skype).

You can also connect via USB, but this requires advanced DIY. The free version of the app only supports standard definition. If you want high resolution video (720p HD), you will have to buy the $ 5 DroidCamX in place.

Start by downloading and installing the DroidCam Wireless Webcam Android application on your smartphone. Then download and install the DroidCam Client for Windows 10 from the Dev47Apps website. Make sure your Android phone and Windows 10 computer are on the same Wi-Fi network.

Open the Android DroidCam app and grant it permission to access the camera and microphone. Once you have followed the tutorial, you will see the main screen of the application which contains the details of the Wi-Fi connection.

On your Windows computer, open the DroidCam client. Click the Wi-Fi button to start the connection process. Type the “Device IP” of the Android application of the DroidCam.

It will then appear in the “Wifi IP” section.

If desired, you can select the “Audio” option to use your phone’s microphone. When you are done, click “Start”.

The camera on your Android smartphone is now activated as a webcam. You can see the preview directly in the DroidCam app.

DroidCam will now be the default webcam for everyone videoconferencing applications. If it is not, go to the audio and video settings of your video conferencing application to switch the default value to DroidCam.

For example, in the Skype app, you will find this option in Settings> Audio and video settings. Here, click the drop-down arrow next to “Camera”, then select “DroidCam” as the source.

If you want to switch to the front camera, press the Menu button in the DroidCam Android app and go to Settings> Camera> Front.

Now all you have to do is set your phone to the right height and angle. You can just lean it against your laptop screen, but we recommend that you invest in a tripod or smartphone holder.
