LG is already well known for its transparent smart refrigerators. Knock on the door and you can get a glimpse of what’s inside. Ahead of CES, the company announced a tracker that enlarges the viewing area so you can see more of the insides of your fridge. But it also adds a new voice command: “open the refrigerator door.“
You might think this is an unnecessary command at first; after all, how hard is it to open a refrigerator? But think about every time you had a handful of groceries and had to put it all down, open a door, and take it all back. LG believes that a voice command will solve this annoyance. Ask your voice assistant to open the door and the fridge will do the rest.
Voice commands are a boon for anyone with a disability; If you are already having difficulty opening the refrigerator door, help is welcome. LG says that the clear glass panel that you activate by knocking (called InstaView) is now 23% larger, so you can see more of the inside of the refrigerator. And he added a UV light-based disinfector to the water faucets.
It remains to be seen how much the new smart fridges will cost. It’ll likely cost at least the same as the current generation of InstaView refrigerators, which often cost $ 2,000 or more. When LG announces pricing, we’ll let you know.
