Make Your Own Smart Lock with a Raspberry Pi, RFID Badge, and Custom Code

One of the best smart home products you can buy is the smart lock. This will help you know who is coming and going, and you can set up routines to lock your door at night or when you leave. But it also often means handing over your data to the company that made your smart lock and any connected smart business like Amazon and Google. If you don’t like this thought, why not create your own?

Now, let’s be transparent and honest from the start: buying a smart lock is easier. If you want something that you can just install and go, this is not the way for you. Before you tackle this, you need to familiarize yourself with the wiring diagrams and coding. You don’t need to write the code, but you will still need to do a bit of homework.

But if you are reasonably practical you should be able to follow YenteDeWael itinerary. At Instructables, he walked through the process of creating your own smart lock. It doesn’t have a traditional key, and that’s something to keep in mind as well. You will unlock the door with an RFID badge, as seen in many offices. You can also unlock it using a fingerprint or website access.

Yet not only can you control who comes and goes, but you can also see when the door is unlocked, as well as who the badge is. To get started, you will need a Raspberry Pi 3 B +, a power supply, a fingerprint sensor, an electronic door lock and a multitude of wires. You will find the complete list on the Instructable guide.

You will also need to build a housing to contain everything and protect it from bad weather and prying eyes. The system includes a screen to indicate when your badge is working and a camera to take pictures of the person at the door. Overall it’s a neat project (albeit bulky and bulky).
