Pouring Grease Down the Drain Is the Fastest Way to Meet Your Local Plumber

Spilling bacon fat and hamburgers in the sewers may seem harmless. Sooner or later, however, this fat will completely stop your drain. Here's what to do instead.

Grease makes a number on your drains

When you finish cooking a particularly greasy hamburger, it's tempting to dump the liquid in the sewers. However, if you leave this fat in the pan long enough for it to cool down, you find that it solidifies again. That's what you'll do too, obstructing the process.

The grease in your pipes collects other waste that circulates there, like food debris. This collection of food and fat accumulates and makes your sink drain slowly (or not at all). Although you can use a drain cleaner, a bad shoe can need a sewer snake or a plumber.

Even if you use boiling water to chase the water, some will stay somewhere in your plumbing and, even worse, it will cause problems to the entire neighborhood. The hot water can keep the fat solid for only so long and eventually cool down.

Pour into a jar
