When the OnePlus 7T hit the streets, we called it the best value for money in smartphones at the time. The company is back with a successor, the OnePlus 8T, and it has a new quad-camera system, incredibly fast charging, and a higher price tag of $ 749.
One of the biggest disappointments for the OnePlus 7T is the below average camera performance, and the company seems to be trying to fix that this time around. The OnePlus 8T uses a new four-camera system, somewhat inspired by its predecessor, the OnePlus 8 Pro.
The former is a 48-megapixel main shooter paired with a 16-megapixel ultra-wide lens. To help you get creative, OnePlus has also added dedicated macro and monochrome lenses to complement the Quadruple Matrix. As with the OnePlus 8 Pro, you’ll find a punch-hole selfie camera up front.
However, the hardware is only half the equation, so we reserve our judgment on the phone’s camera prowess until we can test it. But OnePlus is working on improving its camera software, and now it will automatically detect low-light situations and activate NightScape mode for you.
The OnePlus 8T also goes from the 90HZ refresh rate of the 7T to 120HZ. OnePlus calls it a smooth 120Hz AMOLED display and claims it is the first “120Hz flat panel to achieve DisplayMate’s A + rating.”
You’ll also get the latest and greatest software right out of the box. The OnePlus 8T is the first global smartphone not made by Google to launch with Android 11. As always, OnePlus has modified Android 11 and calls its flavor OxygenOS 11
One of the most notable features, however, isn’t about how you use your phone. This is because OnePlus has taken its proprietary fast charging system and made it even faster. With its new Warp Charge 65 system, OnePlus claims you can get a “full day’s charge” (almost 60% charge) in just 15 minutes. If you need a full charge of the phone, it will take about 39 minutes.
And this despite a battery capacity of 4500 mAh. The company accomplished the feat by splitting its battery into two serially connected 2250mAh batteries and creating a dual battery charging system. The two “batteries” are charged simultaneously. OnePlus says the battery will last too, even after 800 charge cycles it will retain 80% of its capacity.
Charging this fast usually causes a lot of extra heat, but OnePlus says it got that right, and your phone should stay at a “comfortable level.” As for the specs, the OnePlus uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and it supports 5G and Wi-Fi 6. This makes the phone pretty close to being perennial. What you won’t get is wireless charging or an IP rating.
Despite all the camera lenses and the large battery, the OnePlus is incredibly thin and light. It measures just 8.4 millimeters at its thinnest point. And it weighs just 88 grams. For comparison, the OnePlus 8 Pro weighs 199 grams, which puts the 8T at less than half the weight.
You can pre-order the OnePlus 8T today for $ 749, and it’ll be released on October 23. There are two colors to choose from: Aquamarine Green and Moon Silver.
