On a Nintendo Switch, you can mark certain friends like your “best friends”. These people are your trusted group of friends. Here’s what a best friend is and how to take full advantage of special status in settings.
What is the “Best Friends” function for?
Part of the Nintendo Switch’s “best friend” status is a way of “favorite” a friend. It’s a way to tag your closest friends on the Switch so that they always appear at the top of your friends list. Your best friends will have a star in their icon on your friends list.
Best Friends status also lets you share your online status and gaming activity with a small group of trusted friends only if you make certain changes to your settings.
How to make someone a best friend on the Nintendo Switch
Making someone a best friend is easy on Switch. First, the person to whom you want to be assigned “best friend” status must be a regular friend. So if you haven’t, add them first as a friend.
Once the person is friends, press the “Home” button to go to the home screen. Access your user profile by selecting your player icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
From the sidebar menu of your profile page, select “Friends List”. Then browse the friends list on the right side of the screen and select the person you want to become a best friend.
Under the friend’s name, you will see a “Best Friends” option. Select it and press the “A” button.
The star will fill in, showing that the player is now marked as a best friend.
Press the “B” button to go back one screen. Back in the Friends List, you’ll notice that all Best Friends will have a star in the upper left corner of their player’s icon.
You’ll also notice that any friend marked “Best Friend” will always appear at the start (or top) of your Friends list before regular friends. Do you expect anything less for a best friend? I do not think so!
How to share or view statuses, activities, and invites with only best friends
Now that you have a best friend (or more), you can explore some of the advanced benefits that being a best friend can bring. For example, the Switch lets you share your online status or gaming activity only with your best friends. This way, only your primary group of friends will know when you’re playing your Switch and what you’re playing on it. Here’s an overview of each option and what it does.
If you want to show your gaming activity (the list of games you’ve played recently) to your best friends only, open your profile page (your avatar icon on the home screen) and go to User Settings > Reading activity Settings. Select “Show game activity on” and choose “Best Friends”.
If you want only your best friends to know when you’re online, open your profile page, then go to User settings> Friend settings. Select “Show online status on” and choose “Best friends”.
If you want to see pop-up notifications only when best friends go online (but not other friends), open your profile page and go to User settings> Friend settings> Friend notification settings and choose “Notify when friends Go to line.” From the list that appears, select “Best Friends Only”.
And finally, if you want to see only Best Friends game invitation notifications, visit your profile page and go to User settings> Friend settings> Friend notification settings and choose “Invitation notifications “. Select “Best Friends Only” from the list.
As you can see, defining (or being) a best friend can have big advantages over the Switch. It can work as a way to filter out casual friends, maintain some privacy, or reduce notification interruptions. Good game!
