Do you know what’s stupid? Pay multiple times for a subscription service so that every member of your family can enjoy it. The good news is that these days are coming to an end thanks to the new ICloud Family Sharing for in-app purchases and auto-renewing subscriptions. Now you can share the waste you pay over and over again with the rest of your family.
Developers will need to enable the feature, as it is disabled by default. However, some may choose not to make their subscriptions shareable, depending on how the app works. For example, application developers who use IAP for weather data may choose not to enable the feature because developer-side weather services can be expensive. So a shared subscription or an in-app purchase could push the app to a place where it is no longer profitable. Additionally, consumable purchases cannot be shared for obvious reasons.
Apples developer portal said:
Family Sharing provides a simplified and convenient user experience and can help you attract followers, encourage paid subscriptions, increase user engagement, and improve retention. Sales and Trend reports will be updated soon to help you understand the performance of Family memberships.
One of the first apps to enable this feature is the writing app Odysseus. I received an App Store notification this morning informing me that my monthly subscription can now be shared with the rest of my family.
So far this is the only app we’ve seen that has this feature enabled, but I’m sure more will appear over time. Developers will need to assess whether or not they can afford to activate it.
