Opening ZIP files is something people associate with computers, but it can also be done on a phone or tablet. If you download a compressed file to your Android device, it is not too difficult to extract its contents. We will show you how.
Every Android phone comes with a file manager app, but they’re generally straightforward and can’t open ZIP files. Fortunately, there are a number of apps on the Google Play Store that can do this for free.
One app that we like is “Files by Google”. Not only is it a good application for unzipping ZIP files, but it is also a good all-around file manager which can also be used for free up space on your smartphone.
First, download Files by Google from the Google Play Store on your Android device. Then open the app and locate the ZIP file you want to open. If you downloaded the compressed file, locate a “Downloads” folder.
From there, select the file to display the Check Out dialog box. Press the “Extract” button to open the file.
You will see a progress bar and then the dialog will tell you that the file has been unzipped. Press “Done” to finish. If you want to delete the ZIP file, you can check the “Delete ZIP file” box by closing the context menu.
That’s all! The contents extracted from the ZIP file will be placed in the same folder location as the ZIP file itself.
