Controlling your smart thermostat remotely from your phone is cool and all, but remember that you can also make it even easier on yourself and control it with your voice using Alexa. Here's how to configure it.
Before starting, it would be a good idea to learn how to add Alexa skills to your Alexa account as well as add smarthome devices to your Alexa setup . Once you are familiar with both of these things, this guide will be a kid's game. Let's start!
Install Alexa Skills from Ecobee
Yes, you have read these good skills, with an "s". There are several Alexa skills for Ecobee thermostats (two to be exact). You really only need the newest, but the oldest still has its benefits, and I'll talk about it in more detail below.
Open the Alexa application and press the menu button located in the upper left corner of the screen.
Select "Skills" from the list.
Tap on the search bar, enter "ecobee" and press Enter on the keyboard.
You should see two Alexa skills, one called "Ecobee" and the other called "Ecobee Plus". As mentioned above, you really need this last skill, but in order to provide basic voice commands without saying "Alexa, ask Ecobee …", then you will need the old Alexa skill, both can be installed and coexist peacefully.
Tap on one and click "Activate".
Sign in to your Ecobee account.
Hit "Accept" at the bottom.
After that, close it by pressing "Done" or the X button.
You are good from there and can move on to the next step!
Add your Ecobee thermostat to Alexa
Next, you will need to add your Ecobee thermostat to Alexa so you can control the device using voice commands. In the menu of the Alexa app, press "Smart Home".
Press "Discover". You may need to scroll down to access if you have already added smarthome devices.
Allow the application a few seconds to search for devices. Then your Ecobee thermostat should appear in the list.
Voice commands you can use
If you install the new Ecobee Plus skill, you can state a bunch of Alexa controls to control your Ecobee thermostat, while the simple Ecobee Alexa skill only allows you to set the temperature and temperature (or what is the thermostat setting). However, this skill allows you to give up saying "ask Ecobee", so all you have to say is "Alexa, set the thermostat to 75".
With the new Ecobee Plus skill, you have to add "Ask Ecobee" in front of your voice commands, so it would be "Alexa, ask Ecobee to set the thermostat to 75". It's a little boring, so it would be wise to install the other skill too.
However, the new skill allows you to do a lot of cool things. Here are some examples that you might consider using with your own Ecobee:
"Alexa, ask Ecobee to put the thermostat in house mode."
"Alexa, ask Ecobee to resume the schedule." Or "" Alexa, asks Ecobee to cancel the booking. "
"Alexa, ask Ecobee if the heating is on."
"Alexa, ask Ecobee if the dehumidifier works."
"Alexa, ask Ecobee to turn on the fan."
"Alexa, ask Ecobee to take tomorrow's vacation next Wednesday."
This is certainly an improvement over the former Ecobee Alexa skill, and this gives you the ability to play with frequent controls using your voice rather than having to use the application all the time for some things.
